"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28: 18-19
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, “Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. We are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, and made sharers in the mission of the Church.” (CCC 1213)
Baptism imprints an indelible spiritual sign, or character, on the soul, which consecrates the baptized person for Christian worship. Because of the character, Baptism cannot be repeated.
The Church strongly urges parents to baptize their children soon after birth so they may benefit from God’s own divine life dwelling within. However, any unbaptized person may receive Baptism. If the person has reached what is called the “age of reason”—able to understand—he or she must also want to receive the sacrament and have faith, sorrow for sin, with the intention of avoiding future sin.
For all baptized persons, faith must grow after Baptism. For the grace of Baptism to unfold, the parent’s help is important. So, too, is the role of the godfather and godmother, who must be firm believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized—child or adult – on the road to Christian life. (CCC 1254, 1255)
